Don Kirkland II passes (update with obituary)

Long-time MTFOA official and officer Donald Kirkland II has passed away.  

Don served as secretary-treasurer of MTFOA for many years. He was assistant secretary-treasurer at the time of his passing. He was a past president of MTFOA. Don served as referee at many MSTCA, MIAA and college meets indoors, outdoors and during cross country season.  Don started officiating in the 1970s. His passion and knowledge of track and field was truly second to none.  

"As a valued official, past president and past secretary-treasurer of our organization, Donald was a dedicated member of MTFOA for many years. Our condolences to his wife Jane, son Don Kirkland III, family and friends," said MTFOA president Peter Meagher.

"We wish to express our sorrows and share thoughts and prayers with his family and the many student-athletes he interacted with over years,” said a statement from MSTCA.

Donald N. Kirkland II, of Derry, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, October 15, 2018. Donald graduated from Harvard University in 1962. There, he studied electrical engineering, and ran for the track and field team. He worked as a consulting scientist for 40 years at Raytheon. He enjoyed being a Massachusetts track and field official for 54 years, as well as his involvement as an umpire and administrator for Massachusetts and New Hampshire Little League Baseball for 60 years. He also loved attending his grandson’s soccer games. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Jane Kirkland, his son, Donald and his wife Sandra of Derry, his grandson Alex, his brothers, Robert of Mattapoisett, MA and Jon of Rye, NH, his sisters Jeanne of Foster, RI, and Elizabeth and her husband Ray of Epping, NH, and several nieces and nephews. 

There are no calling hours. Private burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Derry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Massachusetts General Hospital, at Mass General Development Office, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114-1101.
