A Letter From The Mass State Track Coaches Assn

Point of Clarity of the motion that Senator Rush is filing s to separate RLTAC from Roxbury Community College. They have failed the track & field student-athletes of Massachusetts, Please reach out to your state Representatives today! Boston Herald, MileSplit and social media outlets have begun the process. We need your help to save our facility!.
To MSTCA members

Last Thursday, Keith McDermott, Executive Director of the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, mwas dismissed from his position by the President of Roxbury Community College without just cause or due process. This is of great concern to us because Keith was always protecting the track as much as he could procedurally, legally and politically. His vision of the facility was that it was built to provide and enhance the opportunities of participating in the sport of Indoor Track and Field for the high school athletes of all of Massachusetts. He always considered it a "statewide track facility". His vision most likely caused friction between the RCC administration and himself.  In the last few years, the RCC administration has lost the real purpose of the facility and he has fought with them on several occasions when reminding them the facility is a statewide track facility. This leads us to a bigger concern:  That concern being that the RLTAC and how it is managed Is under review by the RCC administration.  This review may put the present system of operating at great risk.  The entire track community of Massachusetts needs to be concerned.

Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center was built because the early leaders of the MSTCA filed a bill to have it built. We fought along with the track community of the state for a very long time and when it was finally built, we had language in the legislation to protect our interest in the building. The track was put under what is commonly called a "turnkey" operation. That meant that RLTAC was put under the jurisdiction of the Roxbury Community College. The College is bound to follow the legislation that was passed when the building was built. There have been several occasions where we have had to challenge them with Keith's help in the last couple of years to keep them inside the guidelines in the legislation.
Keith will continue to fight to get his job back and has a great deal of support to help him in this process. We can help him and retain the rights we are supposed to have at the facility by doing the following. We are asking you to look up your State Representative and/or State Senator and email or call them. We need you to ask them to support a bill that would take the power of RCC to be the turnkey for Reggie Lewis and put that power in another state agency. A bill should be filed this week in the Senate by Senator Rush to start that process. We need it to be supported in such a way that it will move quickly. Please take the time to look up the email address of your Representative or Senator and make that request as soon as possible.

Click here to look up your state representative!

In the meantime, the leaders of the MSTCA will attend a RCC Board of Trustees meeting this Tuesday at the RCC and express our displeasure of the dismissal of Keith. We will also communicate our concerns with the RLTAC and the upcoming season and the delay of the Phase II part of the renovations of the facility. This will be a huge fight and we need as much support as possible. We would not ask you to step in and help if we seriously did not consider the RLTAC as we know it to be under attack.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this request.
